Kelowna's Young Sparrows Celebrate a New Dawn With Free Music

Kelowna band, Young Sparrows, make a brand of music best described as heavy rock meets pop-punk. Formed in 2009, the high-energy band is made up of Kevin Moore (vocals), Mike Taylor (guitar), Adam Gabert (guitar, programming) and Kinon Mah (drums). The unsigned quartet put out their sophomore release, Retour À La Case Départ, last week. The record is available for free or a “name your price” amount over on Bandcamp.

The band's latest release marks a significant moment for the Young Sparrows, as it comes on the back of what has been a tumultuous period. The band put out their debut album, We're All On The Same Team Here, back in May of 2012. However, the high hopes and momentum garnered from that release quickly dissipated when a key member of the group left the band. This left the future of the group in doubt as the remaining Young Sparrows evaluated whether to continue making music together or disband. Ultimately, the remaining band members decided to continue on and, after the recruitment of Kinon Mah on drums, their new release, Retour À La Case Départ, - which literally means “back to square one” - started to take shape.

Examining the past year, the 6 track, 25 minute offering explores topics such as self-doubt, relationships and abandonment. The fourth track on the record, “Wolfman”, - which also features Alex Tilley and Ravi Bhatti – saw the Young Sparrows earn a Public Records TELUS supported video grant. You can check out the video, which was produced by Icepick Productions, below.

My personal favourite track on the EP is “You Kiss Pretty Good For A Dead Girl.” Give it a listen below.

You can find Young Sparrows online via their official website.
