VIDEO INTERVIEW: Vernon Band, Paperboy, on Smashing up their Instruments as a Form of Therapy, the Paperboy Look and More...

Paperboy, a three-piece band (note: bass player Braeden Otter recently left the band, but Paperboy is going to continue and they are actively looking for a new bassist) from Vernon, makes a soulful brand of progressive rock. Paperboy perform regularly in Kelowna and are known for putting on rowdy live shows. The band formed in 2010 and is made up of Luke Mortenson (lead vocals and guitar) and Cameron Lutz (drums/percussion), while, as previously mentioned, the guys are also looking to add a new full-time bass player to their line-up. Paperboy has a penchant for nostalgia and a carefully considered aesthetic that comes not from a place of pretension, but passion.

The band released their debut record, First Week on the Job, back in December of 2010. Since then they’ve added a 5 track EP, Strike, and a couple of singles. Their most recent single, “El Scorpiones”, which was released in June of this year, saw the band collaborate with James Balehowsky (AKA James Roy) of JoyfulDoor. “El Scorpiones” is going to be the lead single from the band’s upcoming sophomore full-length album. Earlier this year, the band won a $5,000 Public Records and TELUS video grant for the production of a video for “El Scorpiones.” The video was produced by Lee Watkins, and you can watch it here:

Aside from being the lead single from their next record and helping them win a music video grant, the band are also hoping “El Scorpiones” is going to help fight cancer, as they are generously donating ALL of the proceeds that the single raises to cancer research. How cool is that?

I sat down with Luke and Cameron from the band to discuss the band’s sound, the Paperboy look and so much more. Watch the interview below…

I also put a series of quick fire ‘lightning round’ questions to the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist, Luke Mortenson…

These guys are great, so if you get the chance to see them perform live take it. Actually, your chance is coming up very soon! You can see Paperboy live at Habitat next Thursday, October 10th. They’re playing with Wild Son and Honest Woods. The action starts at 8pm. Whether you make it out to the show or not, don’t forget to buy a copy “El Scorpiones”, and help raise funds for cancer research while adding some awesome new music to your collection! Now that’s a win-win situation…

You can find Paperboy on Facebook and from there find links to their music and more.
