Local Kelowna athletes, Brent McMahon and William Dean will be competing in the 2012 Olympics in London England. Brent, a past Elite Champion of the Kelowna Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon, will represent Canada in the triathlon and William has qualified in the Men’s Rowing 4.
Zellers Restaurant is closing on July 7. New local web page www.kelownavendors.com is designed to promote local vendors. There are over 125 vendors listed on the site and more are continually being added. Everything from mini donuts to handmade jewellery and magicians can be found. The vendors are divided into six categories: snacks and treats; meals and more; artisans and crafts; farm and garden; equipment and entertainment. All of these are based in the Valley. The goal is to have one central location where event planners can locate the perfect vendors for their events. It will also help the public discover local vendors they may not have found otherwise.

Received a note from SOPA Square stating that one-third of their homes have sold and each week they are welcoming more new SOPA owners. Everyone is welcome to the 50th Anniversary of Village at Mill Creek (formerly Still Waters Private Hospital) on July 12, celebrating with an afternoon of fun and a classic car show from 1 – 4 p.m. In 1957 Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Kornalewski built a residence on Pandosy Street that housed 14 people that needed assistance. In 1962 they built Still Water Private Hospital and welcomed 13 residents. In 1965 Rev. Kornalewski died suddenly and the family went ahead with another building, Joseph Benjamin Residence to honour Rev. Kornalewski’s memory. Over the years many upgrades have been made to Still Waters and eventually the original building was replaced by Village at Mill Creek. The new building was built in phases; Joseph Benjamin Residence (2004 -50 suites); Chandler Residence (2007 -96 beds) and lastly Sutherland Residence (2008 - 46 suites). YLW’s Fire Chief Neil Booth is celebrating over 30 years of service. Born and raised in Kelowna, Neil started with the Ellison Volunteer Fire Department in the 80’s when it was created. He was hired at YLW as an airport firefighter in 1990 and in April 2009, he was appointed as Airport Fire Chief.
Lukas Bichler, assistant professor of engineering at UBC’s Okanagan campus has received The Brimacombe Award, a national award given by the Metallurgy and Materials Society to young achievers who bring people together to collaborate on innovative research and significantly advance research in the field of materials science.
Last April, Rick Pogue filled a 20 foot steel container with new and used baseball gloves, bats, balls and children’s clothing that was shipped to the poorest area of South East Cuba, which took four months to get there. The “Caribbean Festival” is July 21st from 1 - 8 p.m. in City Park. This free event will be filled with Caribbean and reggae music, live band performances, lessons on Caribbean dance, hair braiding, face painting, food booths, and entertainment suitable for the entire family. The Uptown Rutland Business Association is hosting “Art at the Roxby Outdoor Art Gallery” every weekend throughout the summer from June 30th to August 26 at the Roxby Plaza in Rutland. Art at the Roxby is a unique event that is not currently offered anywhere else in the city.
