Dynamic Sitting

Have you ever noticed that no matter how comfortable your chair is, your back starts to complain after sitting for a few hours at the computer? The reason is simple; you need to adopt a more dynamic sitting position.

Maintaining a Neutral Pelvis for Better Sitting

  • You will need a medium sized towel or a small baby blanket. Fold the towel in half widthwise and then fold it in half lengthwise. Now roll it up snuggly so that it’s fairly firm.

  • Sit forward on your chair so that you are not touching the chair back, have your feet flat on the ground and your knees a comfortable distance apart. If you have difficulty reaching the floor with your feet, rest them on top of a couple of thick telephone books; this will make hours of sitting at the computer more restful than if you are up on your toes or wrapped around the rungs of your chair.

  • Now, lean forward so that your bottom lifts off the chair a few centimeters. Place the rolled up towel underneath your tailbone and then sit back up to vertical. In this position your pelvis will be repositioned so that you will be more supported through your whole trunk.

Many people feel a lot lighter when they sit this way. With less energy being used to “hold you up” you might have more to enjoy life.
