Kelowna Street Racers Captured
Two men have lost their rides, and their licences, after being tagged for street racing through Kelowna last night.
On July 19th, 2012 at about 9pm, a member of the RCMP Central Okanagan Traffic Services was passed at a high rate of speed by two vehicles on Harvey Avenue at Burtch Road. The two vehicles, a 1997 Chevy Camaro and a 2011 GMC Sierra, appeared to be racing each other as they were revving their engines, changing lanes and clocked at over 110km/h in a 50km/h zone. The officer managed to stop both vehicles, with the help of a red light, at Ethel Street.
Both the speed and the manner in which the two were driving was completely unacceptable and it is fortunate that no one was hurt.
The driver of the GMC, a 48 year old West Kelowna man, and the driver of the Camaro, a 58 year old Kelowna man, both had their licences seized and vehicles impounded. Each was served with an immediate 15 day driving prohibition for street racing and violation tickets for excessive speed.
The driver of the Camaro was also served a violation ticket for no insurance as it had expired last weekend.
The fine for excessive speed ranges from $368 to $483 and comes with a mandatory 7 day impound. Police may also request an increase in penalty and vehicle impound should the circumstances deem it necessary.
