Kirsten Pridham is a “sweet” heart. She cares deeply about her family and especially her two sons. It's also why she created Sugar Sweet Cake Company – to sweeten up any occasion. She creates custom cakes and cupcakes that bring beauty and deliciousness to the special occasions in life. We think you will find her In Focus suits your taste just fine!

What do you always find yourself saying?
Perfect!

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
if it wasn't my kids, then it would be either Jamie Oliver or Ron Ben Israel

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
Professional BC Wedding Award for best wedding cake or any other food award!

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose?
Julia Child

Who inspires you?
My family

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
Spend more time in Hawaii; the atmosphere and cuisine are so inspiring.

Travel to Paris; I need macarons from La Duree!

Open a storefront studio for my business.

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
The S.S. Minnow

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
5 years from today, because I would love to see what I have managed to do with my business.

What are you passionate about?
My family, especially my two sons. Food, art, beautiful things in general. Locally produced goods, be it preserves, beeswax candles, or lavender.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
In my personal life, it is the day each of my sons were born. They were exciting, scary, drama filled...but that moment of holding each of them for the first time, and falling in love, made it all worth it.

Professionally, it was the day I got the piece of paper from Interior Health saying I had passed inspection and my business was approved to operate!

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Reaching all of the personal and professional goals I had set for myself to reach before I turned 30. I received my Red Seal as a chef, became the Executive Chef at a local golf club, bought a house, had a family, and started my own business.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna?
RauDz Regional Table

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna?
Visiting local farms/orchards, farmers markets, etc.

What is your mission?
To "sweeten up" any occasion!

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
To be welcomed by the artists I admire, as a peer.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in 5 years?
I want us to be working from a studio bakery, instead of renting commercial kitchen space from another business.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
Ron Ben Israel of Ron Ben Israel Cakes in New York (and the Food Networks Sweet Genius) and Kaysie Lackey of The People's Cake in Seattle

What 3 qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
We strive to provide the best customer service possible.

We support locally produced ingredients and their makers.

We have a high personal standard for the quality of work we put out into the world.

How does your business/organization impact the community?
We support many charities and organizations by donating our treats to help raise money. We are also part of the large local wedding vendor community, that helps to bring a great number of tourist to Kelowna each year for destination weddings.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
I would want them to be in the food or wedding industry, as I would love to pick their brains about our industry as a whole. I would also discuss investing in the future of my business by giving me advice on raising the necessary funds to open my studio!

If I could change 1 thing about Kelowna, it would be:
The way the city seems to think we need to grow out, instead of up! Kelowna has so many beautiful, natural areas and I hate to see them bulldozed for housing/development!

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The weather, the abundance of farms and orchards, the wineries and restaurants. I was born and raised here, so sometimes take it for granted more than I should, but every so often something reminds me of just how lucky I am to live here!

My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
Dennis Wyatt, founder of Wyatt Auto Parts (locally owned and operated since 1970), my business inspiration and wonderful grandfather.

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at WelcometoKelowna.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.
