He’s done it again. Well-known M.G.A. (Managing General Agent) Terry Wardrop, CLU of Industrial Alliance Pacific Insurance and Financial Services (I.A.Pacific Life) is riding high these days. For the fourth consecutive year, he was I.A. Pacific’s Top MGA in Canada for “Individual Life and Investment Sales” in 2005. This is I.A. Pacific Life’s most prestigious award. And, if that wasn’t enough, one of Terry’s associates, local financial planner Jeff Moffat of Moffat & Associates Financial Services was awarded “Top I.A. Pacific Life Producer” in Canada, also for the fourth consecutive year. Sun Rype’s Chief Financial Officer, Robert McGowan, FCA is retiring on July 7th after 12 years with the company. He will continue his role until a new CFO is in place. The recruitment process will begin immediately. Penny Bugera’s “The Color Room” on Water Street has some new products and some new stylists. Joining their team is Melanie Stipdonk and Giselle Gasper who have trained under Rosalind Satar. Amber Rutledge has also joined them coming from Mirror Mirror. They have introduced a new product that sounds “delicious”. Chocolate pedicure and facials are the new rage and apparently they smell just like white and dark chocolate. The chocolate scrub is something else. Call 861-6606 Anne Schneider, portfolio support officer is retiring from the Bank of Montreal after working on and off (mostly on) for the bank for over 38 years. She is finished at the end of the month and can’t wait to enjoy her new retirement life. She says she is going to do lots of things, like golf, walk, cook more, visit her family in Vancouver and just hang out and take care of hubby Arnie, which will be the biggest job of all. Ruby and Allahdeen Murji have moved back to Kelowna. You might remember they formerly owned the popular Island of Zanzibar restaurant on Bernard Avenue before moving to Calgary for the past three years. They are extremely happy to be back in Kelowna and are managing Parks Café at 227 Bernard Avenue. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner until 8pm. All the items in the restaurant are home-made and Ruby is adding some of her specialties from the former restaurant like her lunch time “Curry in a Hurry”. It’s great to have them back as many of us missed the Island of Zanzibar when they left. Call 979-0222. After 28 years with Interior Savings Credit Union, account manager Val Mackenzie is retiring on April 21. She has been at the Orchard Centre location for the past 13 years and is now looking forward to gardening, doing more crafts and spending time with her granddaughters. Top notch journeyman (or should I say journeywoman) landscape gardener Melissa Scheidle has moved from her position of five years in the parks department of the City and has transferred to the Kelowna landfill. At her going away party, the parks department staff gave her a really neat hot pink hardhat that said “landfill police” on it. Was happy to get an e-mail from Terry Balfour, well-known former Kelowna guy and front desk manager of the Ramada Hotel. Terry recently moved to Puerto Rico and is working as a duty manager at the Intercontinental Hotel San Juan, Puerto Rico. He says he is alive and well and wanted to say hi to everyone. The restaurant has been completely renovated by owners Mariam and Glen Lees. They have repainted the entire restaurant and taken out the long bar along the windows and replaced it with tables, all showing lovely linen. It has a warm and inviting atmosphere. They are open Monday-Saturday for breakfast and lunch and Wednesday to Saturday evenings for dinner. The menu has some wonderful items including Eggs Benedict with Brie Bechamel on Crunchy Sourdough Biscuits and Portobello Mushroom Omelets for breakfast; an assortment of grilled and gourmet sandwiches and soups and salads for lunch and house specialties like Lobster Ravioli with Sambucca Cream Sauce and Baked Chicken and Pesto Rouladen for dinner. Their menu is extremely varied with far too much to list. They are a licensed facility and also offer a wide range of all-natural smoothies and fresh-squeezed juices. It will take a while to look around because of all the neat “stuff” they have. Owner/ operators C.W. Chang, Yi-Chun Lin, Stanley Ng and Luviza Man (husbands and wives) have imported many new beautiful and unusual pieces from China, including extra large mirrors, organza curtain panels, lots of porcelain, onyx lamps and lamp tables, chairs, chest of drawers, altar tables in many lengths, silk cushion covers, fabulous oil paintings, screens, jewellery (sparkly hair clips) and my favorites; 30 inch porcelain dinosaur eggs and huge wine glass arrangements. She calls it her big “walk-in closet” with half the shop being women’s accessories incuding gift items, handbags, belts, costume jewelry and much more. Cyril Chalk is the newly appointed manager for Global Vocational Services located at 103-1635 Abbott Street (Park Place). Global has five offices in the valley and their mandate through Services Canada is to work with people who are recently unemployed or new to the Okanagan and help them find work or prepare to find work. They also work with other service providers to help ensure that people seeking work have a good chance of finding it. Kelowna is finally getting some big time action from Nikon and Canon. Photography West has arranged for the big guys from Toronto to come and introduce all the single lens reflex cameras and show you how to use them. The first course is on April 20, 7-9pm.Canon comes with their head technical man Neil Stephenson and will be demonstrating the new 30D as well as the new printers. This camera can do everything but make your breakfast without being hooked to a computer. Wayne recently saw this presentation and it was stunning. Canon is giving away an IP6600 D printer as a door prize. The second seminar is May 4, 7-9pm with Nikon’s top guy Rob Sturgess. He will be showing the D50 SLR aimed at the person who has outgrown the point and shoot digital or film camera and is ready to be blown away with the simplicity and excellence on the D50 interchangeable SLR. Wayne Duchart is presenting a small program on shooting with natural light with the D50 interchangeable lens. Nikon is giving away a D50 kit valued at $879. Both courses are at the Ramada Hotel. The interesting part which is great is that their corporate sponsors for the event include members of the Kelowna automotive industry and the aim is to include everyone in this awareness campaign as violence against women and children is a family and community issue.
