This week’s column is dedicated to Gerry Hastings who passed away due to complications following a motorcycle accident. Gerry was well-known in the community, having worked for Interior Health for many years. Gerry was a founding member of the ever-exclusive scotch club and he and his wife Joan were active members in many clubs and organizations, including the Okanagan British Car Club whose Rally was held this past weekend in Penticton. His familiar smiling moustached face will be missed by all his many friends. Condolences to Joan and the family.

On July 8th, Okanagan Tree Brewing is celebrating 10 years in the industry, with a party at the brewery at 1083 Richter Street from noon to 5pm. Everyone is welcome for a BBQ, pop, beer tasting and brewery tours. CEO Wayne Clements is ecstatic, not only because of the anniversary, but also because the volume in HL (one HL=100 litres) was up 50% in the first four months of 2006 over 2005. Along with that, the company recently took top honours at the “Best of B.C.” beer tasting during a Pacific Brew News pod cast. And, if that isn’t enough, they launched their new Character “8” Pack in April and one month later it is the number one selling package of their six packages in Alberta and number three in B.C. The consumer is very attracted to the “8 pack” packaging and the variety. Each box contains two of Thirsty Beaver, Hophead, Cutthroat and Honeycomb. The brewery was started in 1996 and after a number of ownerships changes; it was taken over in 2003 with Wayne Clements as the active owner. Since then, change has been the key word and it shows. Stefan Buhl is the company’s well-known brewmaster. Call 717-1091

After more than two decades, Calona wines is expanding and leaving the 58,000 sq. ft. Capozzi owned Cambro Warehouse at 144 Cambro Road. Although the warehouse will be well sought after due to its unique location (close to both town and the airport), and its open layout with wood ceilings and beams, Herb Capozzi expressed regret at the ending of a connection and relationship with Calona wines that has spanned generations, being that the Capozzi’s originally started Calona Wines.

It’s a facility for hockey-specific workout. Their trainer, Jens Keiling has a degree in Kinesiology and has trained at the centre in Vancouver for the past five years. In those years, he is credited with training WHL player Gilbert Brule and other NHL players like Bret Hedican. The Centre has a state-of-the-art “Skatemill” built in Austria and the combination of the skatemill and gym and on-ice training makes this centre most unique. It is a training centre for players of all levels with one goal – to be the best he or she can be. With the lack of ice time in the Okanagan, the skatemill can do as much training as nine ice slots in one hour. The Johnston’s moved back to Canada from California and decided to get involved in a business that follows their passion. They are a hockey family and every member plays, including Teresa's 42 year old body. Both their kids were in the KMHA; their daughter Alisha played Midget AAA while their nine year old son, Trevor played first year senior atom. They renovated the whole facility from the ground up, which took about six months and are in the business of “Developing Habits of Champions”. Call 868-9119.

TaylorMade Golf Tip of the Week by Jason Laczkovics - Golf etiquette is just as an important part of the game as the rules are. Some rules and etiquette around the green that you might not be familiar with are:

If any part of the ball touches the green, it is considered to be on the green and you may mark it and lift it to clean it. You may repair old ball marks on your line of putt, but you may not repair marks made by spikes or shoes. You should also take caution to not walk or step on another player’s line to the hole.

If your ball is off the green and it hits the flag while in the hole, there is no penalty, but if you are on the green and the ball hits the flag while in the hole you must add two penalty strokes. It is a good idea to take the flag out yourself or if you are far away, ask someone to tend it for you and remove the flag just as you play your stroke. (Jason Laczkovics is the Golf Shop Manager at The Okanagan Golf Club and Greg Murtland is the Territory Manager for TaylorMade.
