Straight from DeHart

Date: June 7/2006

This week’s column is dedicated to Peter Mallam who recently passed away. Peter was a pioneer mission resident and a long-time friend of the DeHart family. He will be missed in the community and by all his friends and family.

“GeoTility Corp.” (Geothermal Systems) is going strong in the Okanagan and now in the lower mainland. President Jim Leask was thrilled to tell me that the company has opened a new office and warehouse in Richmond, B.C. The new space is similar in size to the Kelowna operation at #200-1649 Cary Road. There’s more big news. They have been awarded several high profile projects, including Geothermal for the Whistler Sliding Centre that will house the Bob Sled Track for the 2010 Olympics. They will also be installing Geothermal for another very unique project. A 50 storey high rise in downtown Vancouver in the Cole Harbour area called “Flat Iron.” And, if that isn’t enough, they are also part of the team consulting on the Geothermal for the Richmond Olympic Skating Oval. Just goes to show that Okanagan companies can certainly compete and benefit from the 2010 Olympics. Call 762-5776.

It’s all in the potato! This is a really neat place and you’ll be missing out if you don’t stop by and try it. “Shack on the Beach” is located at The Kelowna Marina beside the Fintry Queen at the foot of Bernard. Owned and operated by Barb Multan, Shack on the Beach has the most amazing “french fries” anywhere. Because I could only try a few (I’m still on L.A. Weight Loss maintenance) I took some friends with me. They were very impressed with the delicious fries. The fries are made with special potatoes that they purchase from Margo and Kerry Sawka at The Tomato King on Casorso Road. Barb won’t tell anyone the name of the secret potatoes and Margo and Kerry are also sworn to secrecy. The fries are very light and non-greasy. They change their oil daily which is one of their secrets. You can have them with gravy, cheese or chili, but I think they are best just plain with ketchup and vinegar. Along with Barb, you will see mom and pops (they wouldn’t tell me their real names either, as that is how they have been known for years) to serve you. They also offer hamburgers, hot dogs and Bryers Ice Cream. It’s a nice place to stop with bright coloured umbrellas, clean tables and the best view ever. Barb also runs The Kelowna Marina, has a goat from The Tomato King on her dock (yes a goat), a really cute dog with one eye who wears a life jacket on their boat and a nice boyfriend named Mark. By the way, the parking lot right next door to the Marina is free on weekends. It’s great place to visit.

The Award of an Honourary Fellow is recognition by Okanagan College of distinguished achievement or outstanding service. The criteria for the award are mentorship, excellence eminence and accomplishment, which all the recipients certainly attest to.

This is really neat. Former Mayor Walter Gray received a letter from Ichiro Ukai, Mayor of Kasugai telling Walter that as of May 1st he had ended his term as Mayor of Kasugai. He had been Mayor since 1991 and ended his municipal government duties because of failing health. Ukai, when he was the Mayor, made the trip to Kelowna and led a Kasugai delegation for the occasion of Kelowna’s 100th Anniversary, in spite of his failing health. I also have fond memories of Mayor Ukai and Kasugai. In 1997 when I was vice-president of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce, we joined Mayor Gray and Doreen Gray along with a delegation and visited Kasugai. It was a memorable trip and we had the pleasure of staying with wonderful hosts Mr. and Mrs. Kawasaki, who at that time was the president of Kasugai’s Chamber of Commerce. In Ukai's letter to Walter he expressed his sincere thanks for all the support and cooperation he received from everyone for all those years.

Speaking of Walter Gray, congratulations on his appointment to the FortisBC Board of Directors and also to Harry McWaters as chair of the FortisBC Board.

They are hosting a golf tournament with the “Kelowna Rockets” on June 11 at 2pm with a shot-gun start. The tournament is open to the public but you must pre-register as entries are limited. TaylorMade Golf Tip of the week by Jon Kadin - Bunkers! Those sandy hazards we all love to hate…  If it isn’t enough to have to hit a shot out of them, we also have to be conscious of the proper etiquette and rules associated with them.

Etiquette- Please remember to ALWAYS leave the sand trap in better condition than you found it.  Out of courtesy to the other players on the golf course, raking a sand trap after your shot should be done each and every time.  A question was recently brought up about where to place the rake after your shot.  Each course sets its own protocol on this and depending where you are playing, the rakes can either be placed outside of the bunker or they can be left inside.  Please remember to place the rake, regardless of whether it’s inside or outside of the bunker, parallel with the direction of the hole you are playing.  This will lessen the chance of the ball rolling into the bunker and settling beside the rake…

Rules- A couple of reminders when playing out of bunkers.  Firstly, a bunker is defined as a “hazard”.  Therefore, we are not permitted to “ground” our clubs when addressing the ball.  In layman’s terms we are not allowed to “touch” the sand.  If we do, a 2 shot penalty is incurred.  Secondly, I had heard recently that someone thought hitting the rake was a penalty.  It is not.  Just “rub of the green” or in other words bad luck! (Jon Kadin is the Director of Golf at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf Club and Greg Murtland is the territory manager for TaylorMade).

Birthday of the week:
- Happy 85th Edna Treiber on June 8 (Doreen Gray’s mom).
- Happy 70th Gord Geddes (June 9)
