After 30 years with the city, the past 18 as City manager, Ron Born is retiring. His first posting at the city was as city clerk. He’s got lots planned for the summer, including going on a mission trip to Mexico with his church, The Kelowna Gospel Fellowship with sixteen other volunteers, golfing, fly fishing and visiting his family around the province in their R.V. Ron’s retirement party is this weekend with Walter Gray officiating as M.C.

Speaking of former mayor Walter Gray, a lot of people have been knocking on his door for various reasons. Keep tuned for a couple of announcements in the next while. Also, Walter and his Salmon Arm Cable company partners are attending a CRTC hearing on June 9th in Edmonton for application for a new FM Radio Station in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Also, in the hunt are Standard Radio and former Kelowna radio guy Paul Mann of Vista. Don’t worry; I got it from the horse’s mouth that Walter and Doreen are not moving to Grande Prairie. Stay tuned!

Jodi Evans, former gardener of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club (she was the one responsible for all the beautiful flower beds) has moved on and is now working at Bylands Nursery as inventory co-coordinator. Jodi will also be working with the sales staff at the nursery.

What’s a retired RCMP and head of security at Big White doing these days – why making hot sauce! “Habby Jacks” is a new hot sauce invented and produced by well-known guy around town, Don Urquhart. Habby Jacks does not give up flavour for “hot” and is sugar free, which is a plus for diabetics. There are three flavours of Habby Jacks. Blazn Summer (made with habanero hot peppers and mangos); two are made with habanero hot peppers and peaches (Warm Summer Night and Hot Summer Night), depending on how hot you want to purchase. It’s neat stuff. Habby Jacks is available at Cecil’s Perogies at 1011 Richter Street and Johnny’s Meat’s on Hollywood Road in Rutland. Call Don at 765-3311

This is the coolest kiosk. “Memory Lane” is located in Orchard Park in front of West 49 (in the shortest hallway in the mall). Owner Stephanie Burtenshaw carries a delightful line of nostalgic candy. I’m sure all of us baby boomers can remember pink popcorn; sugar daddies, necco wafers and that sugar filled cotton candy. She also has a good selection of big lollipops and even carries cinnamon toothpicks. Along with her candy, she also carries a full line of Italian charms. One thing, if you have a sweet tooth or you’re going by with kids, you’ll definitely have to stop and shop. Call 212-0246.

Happy 65th anniversary James and Katherine Bazian (May 9).

It boosts the very latest in leading edge technology, improving and modernizing health technology across the province and is a win-win for patients and doctors. Dr. Hooper, head of the KGH Cardiac Cath Lab states that the new equipment provides higher quality images and is a safer experience for patients and staff using the equipment because of the lower radiation doses.

Here’s a neat little story. Last week I was in Phoenix visiting former Gallagher residents and good friends Barry and Linda Gibbs. Linda is a superb golfer and she signed us up for a ladies golf tournament at her course. Unfortunately she got very ill and could not play, but the gals in her club greeted me with open arms. I was teamed up with Paula Ferguson, another great golfer (I’m not that hot) and guess what? We won the tournament in our class. We even got cash (American) for our winnings. Go figure it eh! Thanks Linda.
