Cornerstone Café is located at 101-1180 Sunset Drive (same building as Waterfront Wines and Bouchons Bistro). Owned and operated by Dacy Hoffmann, the restaurant is open daily from 7am to 5pm and will be extending their hours until 9pm this weekend. They serve simple but tasty meals of sandwiches, soup and pastries that are all natural or organic. Their Panini sandwiches are made fresh daily in the shop, with other favorites including fresh baked wild salmon and avocado on 7 grain rye or chicken breast, sliced mango and brie on focaccia. The soups are made by local Chef Mark Filatow from Waterfront Wines. Bread and pastries are from Okanagan Grocery in Guisachan Village and Bliss Bakery in Peachland. They serve excellent coffee, cappuccino and lattes made with beans locally roasted by Belgo House Coffee Roasters. The restaurant is fully licensed so customers can enjoy a special glass of wine with their cheesecake. Call 717-1188.   

Vedanta Academy has appointed Carla McColeman as the new Director of Staff Training and Student Recognition. She has been with the Academy for two years as a teacher, but now that they have grown in students and staff, and with the new cutting edge learning strategies, a staff trainer is required to keep current and new staff up to date on the teaching techniques and learning strategies. Vedanta has 165 students, Grades 1-12 for September/2006. Mike Guzzi is the assistant executive director.

Kelly Watt who relocated from the lower mainland is the new manager of the Sandman Hotel on Harvey Avenue.

Congratulations to Walker Boden of Kelowna Christian School who won the senior division of the B.C. Secondary School Mathematics Contest, Okanagan Region. Also, accolades to Richard Mack of Immaculata High School who won the junior division of the contest. Kristina Gasser, also from Immaculata won second in the junior division. It’s the first time that three winners were from private schools. The annual contest has been coordinated by Okanagan College math professor Clint Lee since it started in 1990 and is province-wide with 13 post-secondary institutions involved.

Susan Steen, executive director of the United Way has announced that this year’s honoree of the United Way Community Distinction Award is former Mayor Walter Gray. The honourary dinner will take place in October during the 2006/07 United Way Annual Campaign.

Elmer Epp has been re-elected for the fifth term as chair of the board of Interior Savings Credit Union. Doug Findlater of Westbank was re-elected as vice chair of the board. In addition, two incumbents, Ron Edward and Jeff Holm were re-elected for three year terms and two board seats will remain vacant until August when the Credit Union completes its Central/North Okanagan region election. The election is due to the sudden passing of director candidate Hank Grenda during the election period in March. 

The local RCMP are busy these days, not only securing our safety, but with staffing promotions and changes. Sgt. Julio Krenz from Winfield and Sgt. Bob Reuter are both getting promotions to Staff Sgt. as watch commanders in Kelowna. Cst. Reg Lawrence, known as the “Peachland Cop” is retiring. On a sad note, Cst. Heather Kent (nee MacDonald) and her new husband. Cst. Paul Kent are both being transferred and relocating to the Chilliwack area. The good news is that Paul has received a promotion to Corporal with the Sumas Highway Patrol. Heather’s new position will be teaching the RCMP’s new information system through the Pacific Regional Training Centre of the force.   

After 19 years with the Kelowna Golf and Country Club, Angela Kochylema is retiring. Angela was an accounting clerk in charge of house accounts.

Lots happening at HSBC these days. Tammy Jurszak is relocating from the main branch on Bernard to assume the position of manager at Orchard Plaza Branch. Walter Jabs will join Tammy, also from main branch to Orchard Plaza Branch, as manager, personal financial services. Michelle Hourie is relocating from Orchard Plaza branch to main branch as senior manager, personal financial services.

Heritage Office Furnishings have moved from their long-time location on Spall Road into a newly constructed 16,000 foot building at 2310 Enterprise Way. The Central Okanagan Hospice Association is celebrating their 25th Anniversary with a golf and gala. The day of celebration is Sunday, June 4 beginning with a fun golf tournament at Vintage Hills Golf Course and wraps up in the evening with an Indoor Garden Party at the Eldorado Hotel. The golf tournament is only nine holes with lots of fun at each hole. There are tons of prizes, a hole-in-one sponsored by AdvoCare with snacks and beverages for only $60. I will be the golf M.C. that day. The evening gala at the Eldorado is from 6:30pm to 9:30pm with a fashion show, auction (live and silent) and live music. The Kelowna Palette Club are having their annual Spring Show of original never-shown-before art.  Featured are 24 artists with over 150 pieces of framed oils, acrylics, pastels and watercolours for viewing or purchase. L. A. Weight Loss Update – Congratulations to Dayna Patterson who lost 118.6 pounds in only 41 weeks. She is an incredible person and you should see her new look – a whole new person. I’m down 45 pounds now sounds kind of little compared to Dayna) and that is it. We took some new pictures and for once, I even like them. Watch for them and let me know what you think.
