Sad news. RCMP S/Sgt. Shawn Wylie is retiring after 38 years on June 4. Shawn started his career with the RCMP in Golden and has been in Kelowna for 13 years. I was pretty upset when Supt. Bill McKinnon told me the news. I asked Bill if I could add something to the new job posting for Shawn’s position. It would state “must be willing to take over traffic duties for the annual Maxine DeHart Drive-thru breakfast.” Then, when I called Shawn, I told him the only way he could retire was if he trained the new member on the traffic duties for the Drive-thru. He said “no problem.” Anyway, all kidding aside, his boots are going to be pretty difficult to fill, but one good thing is that he is not leaving Kelowna.

More sad news! Lauralee Oldham, community and campaign coordinator is leaving the United Way on April 15. She is relocating to Nanaimo with her husband Shayne Smith, where she will be working for the BC Assessment Agency. After over 32 years with Work Safe BC, well-known guy around town, Gary Kreller, CRSP, Occupational Safety Officer is retiring on April 25. Gary specializes in the construction industry, underground mining and is well-known as a blasting examiner for WCB. When I asked him what he felt was his greatest strength in his field, he answered “my wonderful personality.” And, as Sergio at the Ramada stated, “you are a joy to many”. That sums it up for me too! Formerly located in the Kelowna Ready-Mix building on Ellis Street for 20 years, they have moved to new premises, with more room to grow, located at 1340 St. Paul Street. Owned by Wayne and Diana Bruce, and founded by Frans Frake, the company comes from a background of selling fire extinguishers to orchardists to protect them should their water lines freeze or the fire truck doesn’t reach them in time. Over the years they have developed into offering much more, including respiratory, eye, face, and hearing protection as well as fall arrest and restraint equipment, gas detection, first aid and even the best defibrillator on the market. From there they have grown to offer training in some needed areas, such as fall protection awareness, confined spaces awareness and respiratory fit testing. Their large network of manufactures includes Capital Safety, 3M, North Safety, BW Technologies by Honeywell and Aearo. To celebrate, on April 24, they are having a grand opening with a mini-trade show with suppliers from 10am-2pm with all their staff in attendance. Call 763-5005

In the course of four years, Judy Michael and daughter Leah Gray have designed and put into production over 20 different Inuksuk designs. All their gold and silver pendants and earrings are solid with no hollowing out. Each piece is personally designed, carved and hand finished by either Leah or her mother. They have recently secured a retail location to sell their design work at Gallery 421 in the Rotary Centre for the Arts. Leah dropped by to show me some of the pieces and they are certainly distinctive and striking.
