Glenda Miller and her two daughters, nine year old Savannah and six year old Indiana have opened a new “hard” ice cream shop called “Lick-a-licious” at 3013 Pandosy Street. The shop is funky, a little silly, a lot of fun and as Glenda puts it “a little tacky.” It has vinyl walls, a candelabra, vinyl booth, beads in the windows and a purple velvet sofa. I loved it. They serve Foothills Ice Cream and beverages and a specialty dessert called “Lav-a-licious” that is a molten lava cake. We tried the Pistachio, Roly Poly and Peanut Butter Cap Swirl. All “licious”. They’re open seven days a week, including evenings. Call 717-6802 or better yet, just drop in for a scoop.

I just have to get out more. Took a drive up Highway 33 towards Black Mountain to see Allen Kirschner of Kirschner Mountain Estates (the other mountain in town). Wow, the whole area has really changed and there's a ton of building going on. It's a whole new world up there. Phase 1 and Phase 2 has 118 lots and homes and is nearly complete with only seven lots left. Phase 3 (A & B) is just beginning with 75 beautiful city and lake view lots. You can actually see the entire airport runway from one of the lots. Their subdivision is open development, which means that you can choose your own builder after purchasing the lot. Phase 4 will possibly begin next year with 25 more lots. The owners of the Kirschner Mountain development are Allan and Angie Kirschner, Don and Amy Kirschner and Gordon and Heidi Kirschner. Take a drive up Hwy. 33 (right on Loseth) and see what it's all about. Tim Evans is the sales manager at 862-0895

TaylorMade Golf Tip of the Week by Jon Kadin – It’s a fear most golfers have. Going into a sand trap and then trying to get the ball out. We have to remember that when in the sand, we are not trying to “hit” the golf ball. What we want to do is hit behind the ball about 1-2 inches and have the sand “lift” the golf ball out. Try this drill the next time you are at the practice facility.

Place the ball in the sand. Take the basket your practice balls were in, place over top of the ball and twist in the sand creating a circle around the golf ball. Take a swing at the sand and try to “eliminate” the circle. To do so, your club will have to enter the sand 1-2 inches behind the ball and stay in the sand until the other end of the circle is gone too.

This should give you the idea of where to enter the sand and also how deep your club must go into the sand. Remember to follow through as with any other golf shot, with your weight finishing on your front leg. Your bunker play will improve. (Jon Kadin the Director of Golf at Gallagher’s Canyon (jkadin@golfbc.com) and Greg Murtland is the territory manager of TaylorMade (greg.murtland@tmag.com).
