TaylorMade Golf Tip of the Week by Mark Lindsay - This time of year really determines how a course will look and play. Moisture and heat equal prime growing weather and conditions of a course are as important as ever. As a golfing fraternity, we need to start to change the way we view course conditions. We have been led to believe that color determines a course’s condition. The greener the grass, the better the playing conditions. Everybody wants the course they play to look like Augusta National. In reality, we should be concerned with the quality of the surface that we play on versus the color. Courses in Europe and some of the top new courses in the US (Bandon Dunes & Whistling Straits) are more brown than green. This in no way diminishes the quality of the courses, as these links courses have some of the best playing surfaces in the world. With awareness of hazardous materials and the carbon footprint becoming more common-place, many courses will have further water restrictions and other constraints put upon them. As a golfer, it is your duty to do the little things to help course conditions stay at a premium. Fixing ball marks and replacing divots are the two most important things you can do to help. If a divot explodes and the course you are playing provides a sand bottle, please use it. These little tips will help us all enjoy our game more, providing smoother putting surfaces and better looking fairways, no matter what color they are. (Mark Lindsay is the Director of Golf at the Okanagan Golf Club (mlindsay@golfbc.com) and Greg Murtland is the Territory Manager for TaylorMade (greg.murtland@tmag.com).
