Greenhouses

City council looking to support the local production of food by amending laws around greenhouses.

The move affects residential lots and the size of greenhouses

The proposed change would allow for greenhouses up to 3.5 metres in height and 30 square metres in size.

Any structure beyond 10 square metres would require a building permit.

Im thirsty already

The warm, dry weather we enjoyed this winter, could hurt fruit producers in the Okanagan.

Right now the snow pack is at 85-per cent of normal which is below average.

Glen Lukas, GM of the BC Fruit Growers says because its been so dry in the past summer- we kinda needed snow.

Lukas says the reservoirs are pretty low, and water rationing the summer could be a possibility,.

High Profile Arrest

Kelowna RCMP have arrested 28 year old Trevor NILSSON, who was wanted on a Canada wide warrant, at a local restaurant yesterday March 8th.

Thanks to some astute and observant Loss Prevention Officers from a nearby mall, NILSSON was tracked down to a restaurant in the 1900 block of Cooper Rd. where he was arrested without incident.

NILSSON will be returned to the Kamloops Regional Correctional Facility today. Nilsson became wanted for a Federal Parole Violation when he failed to report to his parole supervisor in Kamloops. He has a history of Criminal Code and violence related offences.

Okanagan Sun OK

The Okanagan Sun will no longer be getting grant money from the Province.  The government has announced it will no longer fund adult sports because they can't justify it.

Okanagan Sun President Bill Long says he's okay with it, even though they got 30-thousand dollars from the province last year.

Long says they will take revenue away from other areas to make up that shortfall, but he says this is the new reality,.

KGH on track

We are still on target to open the new patient care tower at the Kelowna General Hospital in the next 2 years.

Communications Officer Cam McAlpine says they're ahead of schedule, maybe by a couple of months, and things have fallen in place nicely, and it looks good.

McAlpine says we could see a lot more activity in the upcoming months.

Buying houses

The number of people in BC who want to buy a home is up to Thirty per cent this year compared to 26 per cent last year.

The 17th Annual RBC Homeownership Survey shows many believe low housing prices and low interest rates are the best reasons to get a place.

The survey, found that those intending to buy a home in B.C. plan to put down the largest down payment ($92,676), compared to Canadians in other provinces.

Housing

Housing starts have increased in the Kelowna area for February.

CMHC says there were 44 units being built--led by the detached home sector. Market analyst Paul Fabri says there is a bit of saturation in multi-units and less inventory of houses.

There were just 11 houses starts in Kelowna last year. The price of labour is also down.

Stolen-Found

Police executed a warrent Friday to recover stolen property.  The search resulted in approximately 250-thousand dollars worth of goods being recovered from a property on Black Road.  A 49-year-old man was arrested at the scene...but Constable Steve Holmes says more people may be involved.

The stolen items include 7 dirtbikes, 2 ATV's, a snowmobile, a jet boat, a Jaguar sedan, a Chevy truck, a generator, a tent trailer, and a piece of heavy equipment.

Cyclist Hit

A 93 year old man, who was cycling on Hwy 33, was clipped by a vehicle this morning but is okay.

The incident occurred at 9:15 Monday, as the driver of a sedan attempted to pull out from a service station, at the corner of Hwy 33 and Hollywood Rd, onto Hwy 33 westbound.

The cyclist, who rode in front of the vehicle, was apparently obscured by a hedge and was not seen until it was too late.

The front bumper of the vehicle clipped the rear tire of the bicycle, pitching the elderly man to the ground. Despite not having a helmet, the victim suffered minor injury and complained only of a sore knee as he was treated by paramedics on scene.

Police took the man's bicycle to his residence.

No tickets were issued.

Massive Grow-op

A massive marijuana grow operation discovered by police early Sunday morning.  Police attended a home on McNaughton road...for a complaint of domestic dispute...however upon arrival...they found a very large marijuana grow operation instead.  Constable Steve Holmes says 17-hundred plants were found.

The plants were discovered in 2 large rooms in the residence.  There was no occupants in the home or any evidence of a dispute.  A Hydro Electrical Bypass was also discovered.

Vernon Stabbing

A 48-year-old woman recovering after a stabbing in Vernon on Friday evening.  Police were called to the lobby of the Sandman hotel where they found the woman laying on the floor holding her abdomen.  After an investigation, police determined the stabbing occured on the street. 

A short time later, a 38-year-old female and a 26-year-old man were arrested near the Blue Stream motel.  The file is still under investigation, but the female is expected to face charges  at a later date.
