I’m baaack! The Maxine DeHart – United Way, Ramada Hotel Drive-Thru Breakfast will be Thursday, September 30th from 6 a.m. – 9 a.m. at the Ramada Hotel, 2170 Harvey Avenue. With help from the City of Kelowna and the local RCMP we were able to secure using Enterprise Way as the entrance to the Ramada Hotel for the Drive-Thru and so, it’s a go again this year. In saying that, all the sponsors were extremely supportive and happy that they will be helping raise money for the United Way and our community and their support and enthusiasm was overwhelming. Along with all our existing sponsors, we are excited to have FORTISBC (Powersense), Mrs. Palmer’s Pantry and Coca-Cola come on board as new sponsors. Incidentally, it is United Way’s 60th Anniversary and we are expecting that all our breakfast bags will be sold out with a record amount of funds being raised. As an added bonus, anyone who donates $60 or more for a breakfast bag will receive a “Live United” T-shirt. If you would like to sponsor, provide a gift for the bags or a gift certificate please call me at 250-979-4546 or max@rpbhotels.com...

Opening on Canada Day, July 1, The Kelowna Fire Museum and Education Centre, located at 1630 Water Street (beside the historic Water Street Fire Hall) started off as an urgent need to preserve the firefighting memorabilia after the 2003 firestorm brought to then, Fire Chief Gerry Zimmermann’s attention how much “stuff” was clogging the local fire halls. Instead of tossing it out, museum executive director Brian Moore came up with an idea that the “junk” was a valuable part of local history; a museum where fire department memorabilia would be collected and made available to the community. Completely run by volunteers, the museum’s collection includes a fully restored 1928 Graham ladder truck (make sure to try out the hand siren when you see it) as well as several other vintage trucks, equipment and over 20,000 images. The education centre was named after firefighter Garry Drachenberg who tragically lost his life on July 22, 1966 and the Firehouse Kitchen Coffee Shop will be managed by the Kelowna Lioness Club (try the unique and healthy yogurt milkshake). The Kelowna Mission Lions Club will be hosting a BBQ outside the Fire Museum between 10 a.m. and noon on July 1st with hamburgers and hot dogs with proceeds going to the museum....
